Cyanotypes

Learning Goals: Understand and utilize the cyanotype process to make images

Supplies needed: watercolor paper cut into postcard sizes, cyanotype ink, cardboard clam shells, sponge brushes, pictures frames (optional for holding things in place)

Process (step by step detailed outline of how the material will be taught):

1. Introduce project

2. Show example

  • Ask students to remember a tip/piece of advice to gather afterwards (one from each student afterwards).

4. Demo process

  • Place design on in the dark. 

  • (hold in place with a glass picture frame. Optional)

  • Expose to direct sunlight for 15 minutes

  • Rinse in dim light under running water

5. Help students prepare their cards

7. Gather objects for printing

8. Layout cards with objects

9. Make second one for themselves

Wax Resist Watercolor Painting (with adaptations for all grades)

Learning Goals:

All grades:

  • I know how to use a white crayon as resist in watercolor painting.

Grades 4 and Up:

  • I understand that resist works to protect the layer beneath the paint by resisting the water in the paint.

Supplies needed: watercolor paper, white wax crayons, watercolor paints, paintbrushes, water cups

KINDERGARTEN

  1. Show example.

  2. Demonstrate Process.

    1. Emphasize pressing hard with crayon and using lots of water with the paint.

  3. Distribute paper and crayons.

  4. Draw time. 

  5. As kids finish they can raise their hands and we will bring them paint, brush, and water.

  6. Paint Time.

  7. Clean up directions. (Clean and dry brush and desk) Hand out paper towels

  8. Clean brush in cup. Dry with a paper towel.

  9. Close paints. Paints and brushes and cups and paintings will be collected by teachers.

  10. Wipe off the desk with a paper towel and throw away the paper towel.

  11. Draw on white board while waiting.

FIRST GRADE, SECOND GRADE, THIRD GRADE 

  1. Show example.

  2. Demonstrate Process.

  4. Once they have raise their hands and we will draw time.

FOURTH-EIGHTH GRADE

  1. Process (step by step detailed outline of how the material will be taught):

  2. Show teacher-made painting example.

  3. Define fonts and the importance of designing each letter.

  4. Explain quotes should be personally meaningful/motivating. Give examples of how they helped us. 

  5. Give students time to write/find their own quote, create a font, and make a pencil draft.

  6. Individually check each draft for appropriateness and to give design feedback (spacing, size, detail) before moving on to make their own paintings.

  7. Work time making resist watercolor paintings

HIGH SCHOOL

Learning Goals:

  • Create their own positive affirmations using the guide (12 words, positive (doesn't use “not”), present tense)

  • Create posters of those affirmations

  • Utilize wax resist in making posters

Supplies needed: watercolor paper, white wax crayons, watercolor paints, paintbrushes, water cups

Process (step by step detailed outline of how the material will be taught):

1. Show teacher made poster example and explain affirmations

2. Give examples of how they helped us

Assessment: 

  • No more than 12 words. Present Tense (“I am”... not “I will”) 

  • Avoid negatives. (not, can’t, won’t, don’t, etc.) 

  • Backed by a real moment/experience/feeling. 

  • Write at least five from which to choose the most motivating one for your poster.
